From September and October 2018, students and colleagues have been enjoying varied food choices and flexibility in campus dining with the opening of the new restaurants, namely: EAT at the main campus, Social Kitchen at the Jockey Club Student Village I and Village II, Social Kitchen – Bayview at the Sassoon Road campus and Dockside at Cyberport.
These new outlets, as well as the other five that will be opening soon, are developed under the University’s new campus catering concept as part of the SMARTER@HKU University-wide modernisation. Using a holistic view to operate the dining services, the new concept brings a diversity of food choices, quality improvement and higher consistency in services to the HKU community.
In addition, the new restaurants place great importance on sustainability. Students and colleagues are encouraged to dine in to minimise disposables. When takeaways are needed, the disposables are made of materials having lower environmental impact such as wood, pressed paper and bio-degradable plastics without any use of polystyrene. Working closely with the University, the caterer Sodexo has also introduced initiatives to minimise food waste and other waste through recycling projects and reduce consumption on water and energy resources, and keeps monitoring the results for long-term development.
The new campus catering service has also extended to on-campus events such as High Table Dinners and tea receptions, serving students and colleagues for their specific dining needs on different occasions.
The other new outlets will be opening by stage in the coming months. For details, visit the CEDARS website: http://cedars.hku.hk/catering. Other information and updates on Sodexo's services at HKU are accessible at http://hku.sodexomyway.com.
