Sustain the Impact Workshop for SMARTER Leaders
Leading transformation programmes requires skills in building, energising and guiding a good team. This is a challenging task in its own right, but it is not the whole story. Effective leaders should also extend their influence upwards.
SMARTER Leaders joined the 3-day Sustain the Impact Workshop to strengthen their capabilities in leading upwards as well as other leadership skills. Through briefings, discussion and interesting activities, participants reviewed the status of their Task Forces and identified the upcoming challenges that needed support from senior colleagues. They practised conversations with the senior level by providing input and raising good questions.
One of the participants remarked, “It is important to be clear about exactly what I want in order to have an effective discussion with the senior people. General complaining does not help.”
Another participant said, “ In justifying my requests, it is useful to not only talk about the benefits, but also articulate the possible negative consequences.”
The Workshop also covered other leadership skills such as critical thinking, understanding strategy, time management and investing in strengths. When recapping the Leadership Development journey during the year, participants said they boosted their confidence in becoming an effective leader and were committed to inspiring their teams and cultivating a continuous improvement culture at the University.
