Different leaders have different values that work for them. Knowing what leadership style, or a combination of several styles, is most effective for leaders. This allows them to focus on how they can best motivate their teams to follow their lead and to achieve success.

From August 20 to August 22, 2018, SMARTER Leaders joined the Accelerate the Change Workshop to learn more about their leadership styles and ways to coach and develop trust with the others. The skills are important as they lead their Task Forces for the continuous improvement initiatives of the SMARTER@HKU Programme.

During the Workshop, the participants identified their values and the biggest challenges at work. They also got to know more about ways to make the leadership shift, the difference between a reactive mind and a creative mind, and how to resolve conflicts more effectively.

“Through the Workshop, I learned how to identify my ‘hot buttons’. Next time when I am triggered and feel that my ‘hot button’ is pressed, I need to calm down and listen to the others,” said one of the participants.

“I would avoid reacting in the old way when my ‘hot buttons’ are pressed. The hot buttons actually point to opportunities that I can further develop myself,” said another participant.

The Workshop proved to be fruitful to the SMARTER Leaders. At the end of the event, they were committed to working with a new mindset by staying open-minded, and leading their Task Forces to achieve the SMARTER@HKU objectives.
